How to Calculate Deck Materials

A deck is really four separate takeoffs stacked on top of each other: the surface, the framing under it, the posts and footings holding the framing up, and the hardware tying it all together. Estimate them in that order and nothing gets missed.

Deck area = Length Γ— Width
Rows of decking = Deck width Γ· ((Board width + Gap) Γ· 12)
Joists = (Deck length in ft Γ— 12 Γ· Spacing) + 1

The two numbers that drive everything else are joist spacing and board width. Tighten the spacing from 16 in to 12 in and your joist count jumps by a third along with the screws that go into them. Move from a 5.5 in board to a 5.25 in composite and you add rows across the same deck.

What this calculator does and does not do

Most residential decks are designed for 40 psf live load plus 10 psf dead load under the IRC. If you are planning a hot tub, a heavy planter wall, or an outdoor kitchen, that assumption is off and the framing needs to be designed for the real load.

Use 6x6 posts. Some code editions still permit a 4x4 under limited conditions, but the American Wood Council's prescriptive deck guide and a great many local amendments call for 6x6, and the extra cost across three or four posts is trivial next to the consequence. A 6x6 also gives you enough meat to notch for the beam properly.

Joist Spacing and Span

Joist spacing is set by the decking, not by the framing. The framing then has to be sized to span the distance at that spacing.

Frame for the decking you have actually chosen. Deciding on composite after the frame is up is the single most expensive mistake on a deck, because a 16 in frame often has to be re-joisted at 12 in.

How far your joists can span

We do not publish allowable joist spans, and you should distrust any free calculator that does. A maximum span is the output of a table with six inputs β€” joist size, species, grade, spacing, design load and cantilever β€” and the tables get amended locally and revised between code cycles. One number printed on a web page is how somebody ends up under-sizing a joist.

Get the real figure from the American Wood Council's DCA-6 prescriptive deck guide, free at awc.org, or from IRC Table R507.5 for the code edition your jurisdiction actually enforces. Read the species and grade off the stamp on the lumber, not off what the yard usually stocks. Then confirm with your building department β€” local amendments are common and they win.

If the deck carries anything out of the ordinary β€” a hot tub, a roof, planters, an outdoor kitchen β€” the prescriptive tables do not apply at all and the framing needs an engineer.

Posts, Beams and Footings

The beam spans between posts; the posts carry the load to footings; the footings spread it into soil that will not move. Get the order right and the rest follows.

Attaching the Ledger β€” Do This in Order

Ledger failure is the most common cause of catastrophic deck collapse, and it is almost always water or the wrong fastener. This is the sequence that avoids both.

  1. Remove the siding down to the sheathing across the full ledger run, plus a few inches each side. You need to see what you are bolting to.
  2. Confirm what is behind it. The ledger must land on solid rim/band joist framing. Never attach a ledger to brick veneer, to stucco, or to a cantilevered floor overhang. If the house does not offer a sound band joist, build the deck freestanding on its own posts instead.
  3. Flash it. Self-adhered flashing membrane on the sheathing, ledger set into it, then a metal cap or Z-flashing over the top of the ledger tucked behind the house wrap and siding. Water must be able to run past the ledger, not into it.
  4. Use the right fasteners. Half-inch lag screws or through-bolts, or structural screws carrying a current evaluation report. Two staggered rows, kept back from the ends and edges of the board. Bolts beat lags where you can access the inside.
  5. Space them per the code table, not per instinct. The required spacing comes from the ledger fastener table in the IRC or DCA-6 and varies with joist span, fastener type, ledger thickness and what the band joist is made of. It tightens as the joist span grows.
  6. Install the lateral load connection. Modern code requires hold-down tension devices tying deck joists back into the house floor framing. The device type, rating and how many you need all come from your code edition β€” look it up. This is separate from the ledger bolts and it is not optional.
  7. Hang the joists with rated hangers and the correct hanger nails or screws. Deck screws and roofing nails are not hanger fasteners and will be failed at inspection.
  8. Get it inspected before you deck over it. Once the boards are down nobody can see the connection that matters most.

With ACQ and CA pressure treatment, all hardware in contact with the wood must be hot-dipped galvanized to G185 or stainless steel. Modern treatments corrode plain and electroplated steel quickly, and that includes hangers, bolts, washers and post bases.

Guard posts are a structural connection, not trim. A guard has to resist a substantial concentrated load at the top rail, and a 4x4 post simply lagged to the outside of a rim joist rarely gets there. Block solidly behind every post and use rated tension hardware.

Stairs, multi-level framing, and tall posts on a walk-out basement all push the number up fast β€” stairs are the most expensive square footage on any deck. Prices vary widely by region and by year; treat the ranges as planning brackets, not quotes.

The honest trade: pressure-treated framing under composite decking is the best value on this list. Nobody sees the frame, composite kills the annual sanding and staining, and the price gap between PT decking and entry composite is smaller than the ten years of maintenance it saves.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate how much decking I need?

Divide the deck width by the coverage of one board including the gap, then round up to get the number of rows. A 5.5 in board with a 1/4 in gap covers 5.75 in, or 0.479 sq ft per linear foot. A 12 ft wide deck needs 26 rows; at 16 ft long that is 416 linear feet of board before waste.

How many joists do I need for a deck?

Divide the deck length in inches by the spacing and add one for the closing joist. A 16 ft deck at 16 in on center is (192 Γ· 16) + 1 = 13 joists. Add extra for doubled beams, doubled joists under a partition, and any joist you double up to carry a hot tub or a stair landing.

How far can a 2x8 deck joist span?

There is no single number, and we will not print one. The answer changes with species, grade, spacing, design load and whether the joist cantilevers β€” a 2x8 in one species and grade will not go as far as the same 2x8 in another. Look up your row in AWC DCA-6 or IRC Table R507.5 for the code edition your jurisdiction enforces, and read the species off the grade stamp rather than assuming it.

What spacing should deck joists be?

16 inches on center is the standard for 5/4x6 and 2x6 wood decking. Go to 12 inches for diagonal decking and for most composite and PVC boards. 24 inches is only acceptable with 2x decking specifically rated for it, and never with 5/4 radius-edge board. Check the decking manufacturer instructions before you frame, not after.

How far apart should deck posts be?

Commonly 6 to 8 feet on a residential deck, but the real spacing comes from the beam span table for your beam size, species and joist span. A tripled 2x12 goes further than a doubled 2x10. Never choose post spacing for convenience β€” it is the one dimension that sets how hard the beam is working.

How deep do deck footings need to be?

Below the local frost line, which ranges from essentially zero in the deep south to 48 inches or more in the northern plains. Many jurisdictions also set a minimum depth into undisturbed soil regardless of frost. Your building department publishes the number. A footing above frost heaves, and a heaving deck tears at the ledger connection.

Should deck posts be 4x4 or 6x6?

Use 6x6. Some code editions still allow a 4x4 in limited situations, but the AWC prescriptive deck guide and many local amendments require 6x6, and a 6x6 gives enough material to notch for the beam properly. Across three or four posts the cost difference is negligible against the consequence of getting it wrong.

How high does a deck railing have to be?

Typically 36 inches minimum for residential decks, with a guard required once the walking surface is more than 30 inches above the grade below. Commercial work and some local codes require 42 inches. What are the stair rise and run rules for a deck?

Typical residential convention is a maximum 7-3/4 inch riser and a minimum 10 inch tread run, with riser heights in one flight varying no more than 3/8 inch. A handrail is required once there are four or more risers, set 34 to 38 inches above the tread nosings. Confirm all four figures against your local code before you cut stringers. Stairs are the most expensive square footage on a deck and the part inspectors look at hardest.

How many screws do I need for a deck?

Two screws per board at every joist crossing. That works out to roughly 350 screws per 100 square feet of 5/4x6 decking at 16 in on center. Tighten the joist spacing to 12 inches and the count rises by about a third. Buy hot-dipped galvanized or stainless β€” plain steel corrodes in treated lumber.

Can I attach a deck ledger to brick or stucco?

No. A ledger must bear on solid rim or band joist framing. Brick veneer, stucco, and cantilevered floor overhangs cannot carry a deck. If the house does not offer a sound band joist to bolt to, build the deck freestanding on its own line of posts and footings instead. This is one of the most common causes of deck collapse.

What fasteners can I use with pressure-treated lumber?

Hot-dipped galvanized to G185, or stainless steel. Modern ACQ and CA treatments corrode plain and electroplated steel within a few years. This applies to everything touching the wood: screws, lag bolts, washers, joist hangers, post bases and post caps. Mixing stainless fasteners with galvanized connectors can also cause galvanic corrosion, so keep the system consistent.

Do I need a permit to build a deck?

Almost always, yes. Most jurisdictions require a permit for any deck attached to the house or raised above a set height, and they will inspect the footings and the framing before you cover them. Skipping the permit creates a problem at resale and can void a homeowner insurance claim. Call the building department before you dig.

How much waste should I add to a deck order?

10% is the standard allowance for a straightforward rectangle. Go to 15% if you are running a picture-frame border or the deck is long enough to need many butt joints, and 20% for 45 degree diagonal decking. Framing lumber can run a little tighter at around 10%, since joists are cut to a repeated length.
