Depths vary by product, so read the bag chart rather than assuming. The practical rule: if you can see the tops of the ceiling joists, you are well under current recommendations. Joists are typically 2Γ6 to 2Γ10, so insulation level with them is roughly R-19 to R-30 at best.
R-value has diminishing returns, and the maths is simple enough to check. Conductive heat loss is proportional to 1÷R, so each added inch buys less than the one before it. Starting from a poor R-11 attic: reaching R-30 removes about 63% of the original conductive loss, R-38 removes 71%, R-49 removes 78%, and R-60 removes 82%. Air Sealing: The Part That Changes the Payback
Insulation slows heat conduction. It does almost nothing about air moving through gaps. In a typical attic the leaks are at top plates, plumbing and wiring penetrations, recessed light housings, chimney and flue chases, bath fan housings, and the attic hatch itself. Warm indoor air rises through those gaps and takes the heat with it, straight past whatever insulation is lying on top.

1. Whether the old insulation comes out

DIY vs Hiring Out
Attic insulation is one of the more DIY-accessible energy projects, with a real caveat about working conditions.
- Blowing machines are commonly free to borrow with a bulk insulation purchase from a big-box retailer, typically with a minimum bag count of around 10 to 20. That is where most of the DIY saving comes from.
- Materials only run roughly $0.40 to $1.10 per square foot for blown fibreglass or cellulose to R-49, which is often 40% to 55% of an installed price.
- It is a two-person job. One feeds the hopper, one runs the hose in the attic. Doing it alone means climbing up and down constantly.
- The conditions are genuinely bad. Attics run well over 120Β°F in summer. Work early morning, wear a fitted respirator, goggles, gloves and long sleeves, and step only on joists or laid boards.
- Do the air sealing first and do it properly, because once the loose fill is in you will not be going back.

Get three, and force them onto the same scope. Ask each contractor to write down:

- Whether bath and dryer vents terminate outside, and what happens if they do not.
- Depth markers β installed rulers proving the final depth. Reputable installers use them.
- Rebate paperwork β who files it and whether pre-approval is needed.
Bag count is the number to compare. Every blown insulation product has a published coverage chart giving square feet per bag at a given R-value. A quote that promises R-49 across 1,200 sq ft with far fewer bags than the chart requires is promising a depth it will not deliver, and nobody will ever climb up to check. Ask for the bag count in writing and check it against the manufacturer chart.
Where You Can Save and Where You Should Not
Real savings
- Top up rather than remove and replace, when the existing insulation is dry, clean and not vermiculite. Removal is a large cost with no thermal benefit in that case.
- Blow it yourself with a borrowed machine. This is the biggest single DIY saving available in an attic.
- Choose blown fibreglass or cellulose over spray foam for a standard vented attic. The performance difference on an attic floor does not justify the price difference.
- Do the air sealing yourself with canned foam and caulk over a weekend, then have the blowing done professionally.
- Claim every rebate and tax credit available before you book, since many require pre-approval.

False economies
- Skipping air sealing to afford more R-value. This is the classic mistake. Air leakage bypasses insulation entirely, and once loose fill is down the leaks are permanently buried.
- Blocking the soffit vents. Pushing insulation into the eaves without baffles cuts off intake ventilation, which causes moisture accumulation and, in cold climates, ice dams. Baffles cost a few dollars each.

The pattern here is different from most construction projects. On a slab or a wall, the false economies are about structural specification.
