How to Calculate Hardwood Flooring
Hardwood is bundled and sold by square footage of coverage, the same way as laminate and vinyl plank β but two things make hardwood orders run higher than the other flooring types: natural defects that get cut around, and boards sold in random lengths rather than one fixed size.
Round up to a whole box. Solid hardwood in particular is worth over-ordering slightly on a first-time order β dye-matching a small top-up later, months or years on, is far harder than with laminate or vinyl.

Solid hardwood is the only floor here you can refinish repeatedly, which is why it outlasts everything else by decades β but it's also the pickiest about moisture and is not recommended over concrete slabs or below grade. Engineered gets around that with a stable plywood core, at the cost of a shallower wear layer to sand down the road.
Waste Factor by Board Width and Grade
Waste for hardwood runs higher than laminate or vinyl for two reasons that stack: cutting around natural defects, and matching random-length boards at the ends of rows.

Character and Rustic grades genuinely need more waste, not just a design preference β more knots, mineral streaks and colour variation mean more boards get set aside or cut around during layout, even though that same variation is the point of choosing the grade.
Fasteners and Felt Paper for Nail-Down Installs
Nail-down solid and engineered floors are fastened with 15β16 gauge flooring cleats or staples driven through the tongue at an angle, using a pneumatic or manual flooring nailer. Manufacturers commonly call for fasteners roughly every 6β8 inches along each board and within 1β2 inches of each end β narrower boards need proportionally more fasteners per square foot than wide plank.

We report a fastener count rather than a number of boxes, because cleat and staple boxes ship in 1,000, 5,000 and 7,500 counts depending on brand and length β a "square feet per case" figure is meaningless without knowing the count. Installing Hardwood: Step by Step
- Acclimate the bundles in the room for at least a week for solid hardwood β longer than laminate or vinyl need, since solid wood moves more with humidity. Engineered typically needs less, but check the manufacturer's minimum.
- Test the subfloor moisture before installing, especially over concrete or in a new build. Excess moisture is the leading cause of cupping and buckling after install.
- Lay building felt over a wood subfloor for nail-down installs.
- Snap a working line parallel to the longest wall or the main light source, and dry-lay the first few rows to check spacing before fastening anything.
- Face-nail or blind-nail the first few rows by hand near the starting wall, where a flooring nailer can't reach, then switch to the nailer for the field of the room.
- Stagger end joints by at least 6β8 inches between rows, and rack out several rows ahead of time to balance color and grain before committing to the layout.
- Leave a 1/2 to 3/4 inch expansion gap at the walls, covered later by baseboard or shoe moulding β solid hardwood moves more seasonally than engineered or laminate, so don't undersize this.
