How Much Joint Compound per Square Foot?
The working rule for a standard three-coat Level 4 finish is about one gallon of joint compound per 100 square feet of drywall. That covers taping, filling, and finishing all the seams, plus the screw dimples and corners.

A standard 4 Γ 8 sheet is 32 square feet, so one 4.5 gallon bucket finishes roughly 14 sheets at Level 4. For a typical 12 Γ 12 ft room with 8 ft ceilings β about 600 square feet of drywall including the ceiling β you're looking at 6 gallons, or two buckets bought with a little spare.
Buy one more bucket than the math says. Running out mid-coat means a trip to the store and a hard edge where the compound set, and unopened buckets return without argument.

Levels of Drywall Finish
"Level" is a real industry specification, not a loose term β the levels come from the joint standard published by the gypsum association and the drywall finishers' union. Which one you need is a decision about the paint and the lighting, not about care.
- Level 0. No finishing at all. Temporary construction.
- Level 1. Tape set in compound at the joints. Above ceilings and in plenum spaces where nobody looks.
- Level 2. Tape plus one coat. Garages, warehouses, or under tile.
- Level 3. Tape plus two coats. Under heavy texture or heavy-bodied paint. Not acceptable under flat paint.
- Level 4. Tape plus three coats, sanded smooth. The residential standard β correct for flat paints and light textures.
- Level 5. Level 4 plus a thin skim coat over the entire surface. Required for gloss and semi-gloss paints, dark colors, and any wall raked by side lighting.
The practical trigger for Level 5 is light and sheen. Flat paint on a wall with no side light hides an enormous amount. A satin or gloss finish on a wall lit from a window at a shallow angle shows every joint, because the paper on a taped joint reflects differently from the paper on the board. If you have big windows and are painting anything with sheen, skim it.

All-purpose is the sensible default and the only bucket most jobs need. It bonds tape well and finishes acceptably.
Setting-type compound is the one worth understanding. It's a powder that cures chemically rather than by drying, sold by working time β 20, 45, 90, or 210 minutes. That means you can do multiple coats in one day, and it barely shrinks, so it's the right choice for filling deep gaps or patching. The catch: once it sets it is genuinely hard to sand, so it belongs under the finish coats, not as one.
A common professional approach is setting-type for the tape coat and deep fills, then lightweight all-purpose or topping for the last two coats where sanding effort actually matters.
How Much Tape Do I Need?
Figure roughly 40 linear feet of joint tape per 100 square feet of drywall β a 250 ft roll covers about 600 square feet. That accounts for both the flat seams and the inside corners.
Paper tape is stronger and the standard for flat seams and corners; it needs to be bedded in wet compound. Mesh tape is self-adhesive and easier for beginners, but it must be used with setting-type compound over it, since it's weaker in tension and all-purpose over mesh is a common cause of cracked seams.
For outside corners, use metal or vinyl corner bead rather than tape β measure those separately by the linear foot of corner.
How to Mud Drywall: The Three Coats
- Check the hanging first. Set any proud screws and knock down torn paper. Compound can't fix a badly hung sheet, and a bulged seam stays bulged through all three coats.
- Tape coat. Bed paper tape in a thin layer of compound over every seam with a 6 inch knife, squeezing out the excess so the tape sits flat. Fill screw dimples with a first pass at the same time.
- Do corners in two passes. Mud one side of an inside corner, let it dry, then the other. Doing both at once pulls the first side out of shape.
- Dry fully. Pre-mixed compound needs 12β24 hours per coat, longer in humidity or cold. Coating over damp mud traps moisture and cracks later.
- Second coat, wider. Switch to a 10 inch knife and feather 8β10 inches either side of the seam. You're not filling now β you're widening the transition so the buildup becomes invisible.
- Knock down ridges between coats. A quick scrape with the knife edge beats sanding, and produces far less dust.
- Third coat, wider still. A 12 inch knife, feathered 12β14 inches out. Apply thin β this coat is about the transition, not the fill.
- Sand lightly. 120β150 grit on a pole sander, with a light touch. Sanding into the paper face raises fuzz that shows through paint.
- Skim coat if going Level 5. Roll a thin layer of thinned compound over the whole surface and scrape it flat with a wide knife.
- Prime before judging. Bare compound and bare paper absorb differently, so joints look worse than they are until primed. Use a drywall primer or PVA sealer, then inspect with a work light held flat to the wall.
Drywall Mud Mistakes to Avoid
- Applying it too thick. The instinct is to fill the seam in one pass. Thick compound shrinks, cracks, and takes forever to dry. Three thin coats always beat one heavy one.
- Coating over damp mud. Trapped moisture causes cracking and blistering weeks later. Wait for a uniform color change across the whole seam.
- Sanding instead of feathering. If you need heavy sanding, the compound went on too thick or too narrow. Wider knives and thinner coats mean almost no sanding.
- Mesh tape with all-purpose compound. Mesh needs setting-type over it. This pairing is the most common cause of cracked seams in DIY work.
- Skipping primer before inspecting. Unprimed joints always look flawed. Prime, then judge with a raking light.
- Level 4 under gloss paint. Sheen and side lighting expose the difference between joint compound and paper. Skim to Level 5 or accept visible joints.
- Letting the bucket skin over. Smooth the surface and mist a little water before lidding, or you'll be picking hard lumps out of your finish coat.
