Drywall Levels of Finish, Explained

The Gypsum Association defines six finish levels, 0 through 5, and the number a contractor quotes changes what you pay by a meaningful amount. Most residential rooms only ever need Level 4. This guide explains what each level actually involves, and β€” more usefully β€” how to tell which one your walls need before you order compound.

What a "Level of Finish" Means

The six levels β€” 0 through 5 β€” come from a joint standard published by the Gypsum Association (GA-214) and referenced by ASTM. Each level defines two things: how many coats of joint compound go over the tape and fasteners, and whether the field of the board gets skimmed at all. It is not a grading scale of "good to great" β€” it is a spec sheet. A closet gets a different level than a great room with south-facing windows, and both can be done correctly.

The level is decided before the mud goes on, because it changes how the wall is taped and coated from the first pass. Deciding you want Level 5 after the wall is already at Level 4 and painted means skim-coating over paint β€” doable, but more work than doing it right the first time.

Levels 0 Through 5

Level 0 β€” Nothing

No taping, no compound, no fasteners finished. This is a stage, not an end state β€” drywall hung for temporary construction, or panels going up behind something that will cover them completely.

Level 1 β€” Tape embedded, nothing else

Joint tape is set into compound at the seams and the excess is wiped off, but there is no additional coat and fastener heads are left untouched. Used above ceilings, inside chases, and in plenum spaces β€” anywhere no one will ever look at the surface, but fire separation between spaces still has to be continuous.

Level 2 β€” Tape plus one coat

The tape coat gets one additional layer of compound over joints and fasteners. This is the standard for surfaces that will be covered by something else that hides minor imperfection β€” tile backer behind a shower, or a garage wall that will stay unpainted or get a single coat of utility paint.

Level 3 β€” Tape plus two coats

Two coats over the joints and one over the fasteners, sanded smooth enough for texture or heavy-bodied paint to hide what is underneath. This level is not sufficient under flat or low-sheen paint on its own β€” the two coats are not wide or flat enough to disappear without the texture doing some of the hiding work.

Level 4 β€” Tape plus three coats, sanded

One tape coat, one fill coat, and one finish coat, each wider than the last and sanded smooth. This is the residential default and what most contractors mean when they say "finished drywall" without qualifying it further. It is correct for flat and most eggshell or matte paints under normal room lighting.

Level 5 β€” Level 4 plus a full skim coat

Everything in Level 4, plus a thin, uniform skim of compound (or a comparable skim-coat product) applied over the entire surface, not just the joints. It evens out the difference in porosity between paper-faced board and taped seams, which is what Level 4 cannot fully hide once light or sheen exposes it. This is covered in more depth below.

Which Level for Which Paint and Lighting

Two variables decide the level you need: paint sheen and how the wall gets lit. Sheen and gloss both reflect light directly instead of scattering it, and a taped joint reflects light slightly differently than the paper face of the board on either side of it β€” under flat paint that difference is invisible, and under anything glossier it can read as a faint ridge running the length of every seam.

"Raking light" is the term worth remembering: any light source that hits the wall at a shallow angle β€” a low window, a wall-mounted sconce, a skylight β€” exaggerates every bit of texture the wall has, taped joints included. A wall with no windows and only overhead lighting is far more forgiving than the same wall with a west-facing window throwing late-afternoon sun sideways across it.

Why Level 5 Exists

Level 5 was added to the standard specifically because Level 4 has a known failure mode: photographing, sometimes called "flashing" or "joint banding." Joint compound and the paper facing of drywall absorb paint at slightly different rates, even after priming. Under flat paint in even light this difference is too small to see. Under anything with sheen, or under strong side lighting, the taped areas can show up as a subtle but unmistakable band running the exact width of the tape and knife strokes β€” a ghost outline of every seam in the room, visible from across it.

The skim coat in Level 5 solves this by giving the entire surface, not just the joints, one uniform layer of the same material. There is no longer a boundary between "board" and "joint" for paint to absorb differently across, so the photographing effect disappears. It is extra labor and extra compound for a problem that, in the wrong lighting, is genuinely difficult to hide any other way β€” priming with a high-build primer helps but does not fully substitute for a skim coat under strong raking light.

Mostly in labor rather than material β€” the skim coat adds a full extra pass over the whole surface, not just the joints. In compound alone, expect roughly 50% more than a Level 4 job (about 1.5 gal per 100 sq ft versus 1.0 gal), plus the added time to apply and sand a full skim coat evenly.

Can I skim coat over an already-painted wall to reach Level 5?

Yes. Scuff-sand the painted surface first so the compound has something to grip, apply a thin uniform skim coat, sand it flat, then prime and repaint. It works well, but it is more labor than specifying Level 5 before the wall was ever painted, since you are covering finished paint instead of taped joints.

Does texture replace the need for a higher finish level?

For sheen and light, somewhat β€” texture breaks up the surface enough that joint banding is much harder to see, which is why Level 3 is paired with texture rather than flat paint. It does not substitute for Level 4 or 5 on a smooth wall, and most homeowners today prefer smooth walls over texture regardless.

What finish level do ceilings need?

The same logic as walls, based on paint and light β€” but ceilings under skylights or large windows get some of the harshest raking light in a house and are a common place people under-spec the finish. A flat-painted ceiling with no skylights is fine at Level 4; a ceiling with skylights usually wants Level 5.
