Wear Layer & What It Actually Protects
The wear layer is the clear, urethane-coated top film that takes the scuffing, scratching and foot traffic β it is not the plank's overall thickness, which also includes the printed vinyl layer and the rigid or flexible core underneath.

WPC costs more for a quieter, warmer feel underfoot β worth it in a bedroom, less necessary in a mudroom. Click-Lock vs Glue-Down vs Loose-Lay

- Click-lock (floating): planks snap together and float over an underlayment, not fastened to the subfloor. Fastest DIY method. Needs underlayment unless it's pre-attached to the planks β don't double up both.
- Glue-down (full spread): a pressure-sensitive or wet-set adhesive is trowelled over the whole subfloor. More labour, but the most dimensionally stable option and the standard choice for large commercial floors or rooms with rolling loads. Even a fully waterproof core doesn't waterproof the subfloor underneath β standing water can still travel through seams and damage plywood or OSB below. Wipe up spills promptly regardless of the wear layer or core rating.
Installing Vinyl Plank: Step by Step
- Acclimate the boxes for 48 hours in the room at normal living temperature, especially for WPC and flexible LVT, which move more with temperature than SPC.
- Check subfloor flatness β typically within about 3/16 inch over 10 feet for rigid-core click-lock, tighter for flexible LVT which telegraphs subfloor texture more readily.
- Undercut door casings rather than scribing planks around them.
- Leave a 1/4 inch expansion gap at the walls for floating installs; glue-down floors need much less, per the manufacturer's instructions.
- Stagger end joints by at least 6 inches, and mix planks from multiple boxes as you go to blend shade variation.
- For glue-down, work in sections small enough to lay planks within the adhesive's open time β check the pail for the working window before spreading a whole room.
